Mei Lingxiao commands the screen with a rare stillness that draws audiences into the emotional core of every scene. Her performances across period dramas and international co-productions have earned critical acclaim on both sides of the Pacific.

Born in Hangzhou and classically trained at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Mei spent her formative years immersed in both Kunqu opera and contemporary method acting. This dual discipline gives her work its distinctive texture — gestures rooted in centuries of tradition, delivered with the raw spontaneity of modern cinema. Directors frequently remark on her ability to inhabit a character so completely that the camera simply documents a life unfolding.

Her breakout role as the displaced scholar-painter in The Forbidden Garden earned her the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actress and led to her first European collaboration on Lantern of the West, a Franco-Chinese co-production that premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Since then she has navigated effortlessly between intimate arthouse narratives and large-scale historical epics, most recently anchoring the ensemble cast of Crimson Silk Road, which opened across twelve territories simultaneously.

Represented by Étoile Muse since 2018, Mei continues to seek projects that challenge conventional storytelling. Off-screen she is an advocate for emerging female screenwriters in mainland China, hosting an annual residency programme in partnership with the Beijing Film Academy.
